Galatasaray score five to get first leg advantage
7 - The biggest result on Tuesday came in Turkiye, where Galatasaray ran rampant in the second half to stun Juventus 5-2 at home and give themselves a strong chance at advancing. Noa Lang scored twice as the hosts made the most of their man advantage to prevail. Remarkably, Gala are unbeaten in their last seven European home games where they conceded at least twice (4-3-0).
67 - Juve will have their work cut out for them next Wednesday at the Allianz Stadium. It is the fifth time they have lost one leg by three or more goals in the European Cup/Champions League all-time, and have never progressed. That will make the task all the more challenging. Moreover, it is the first time in 67 years - their maiden continental away game - that the Bianconeri have conceded five or more times.
5 - AS Monaco gave fellow Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain all they could handle at Stade Louis II, but Folarin Balogun's early brace was overturned by Desire Doue. In the end, Les Monegasques fell 3-2 to the holders, meaning they will have to score at least once next week to advance. Home games in the knockout rounds have not gone well for the Principality club in recent years. They are winless in their last five such matches (0-1-4) since beating Borussia Dortmund in 2016/17.
13 - PSG, who already had problems against Monaco in the league this term, will be relieved to come out on top in this one. Les Parisiens have been quite strong on the road of late, especially in two-legged ties. They won three of four en route to the trophy in 2024/25, and have started things off on the right foot this time around. PSG have now scored 13 times versus fellow Ligue 1 opposition in Europe.
8 - Goals from Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier gave Borussia Dortmund a 2-0 first leg success at the expense of Atalanta. Die Schwarzgelben have one foot in the last 16, a round they have made each of the last three years and six of the last seven. They remain unbeaten versus their Italian-based opponent, who they also eliminated at this stage of the Europa League eight years ago. Dortmund are now eight matches without defeat in knockout round home games (6-2-0).
16 - Atalanta, who were eliminated in this round a year ago, find themselves in a very familiar spot. This is their fourth appearance in the knockout round of the UCL, and have lost at the first hurdle in their last two attempts. Unless they can turn things around in Bergamo, that streak will continue. Tuesday's reverse was their 16th in the competition all-time, which is the same number of wins.
6 - A match with unwanted distractions went the way of Real Madrid, who edged Benfica 1-0 in the Portuguese capital. As Aguias could not work the magic from three weeks prior, but are far from out of this tie. They have successfully negotiated a knockout round play-off tie in each of their last two seasons. Benfica have had problems scoring in Europe this term though. This was the sixth match, qualifiers included, in which they failed to score in the UCL this campaign.
17 - Real earn their second win over Benfica 61 years after their other one. They still lose the head-to-head (2-0-3), though that could change with another victory in the return leg. With that in mind, Los Blancos will want to be careful. After all, they have reached the round of 16 or better for every season since 1996/97. Tuesday night was the 17th time that Real have come out on top versus Portuguese opposition.
Bodo/Glimt do the unthinkable
18 - Just as was the case three weeks prior, Qarabag's struggles against Premier League teams continued in a 6-1 hiding at home to Newcastle. Anthony Gordon's four-goal haul in the opening half set the Magpies on their way, leaving Atlilar completely stunned. Although this has been a historic season for Qarabag and for Azeri football, it looks set to end next Tuesday. Qualifiers included, they have conceded 18 times in the UCL this term.
19 - For Newcastle, it was just the performance they needed after failing to win their last three away contests in the UCL. They peppered the Qarabag goal, with 14 of their 22 attempts in the match being on target. In what is their first two-legged tie in the knockout stages of the competition, they could not have asked for a better outcome. Having won in Belgium on matchday 2, Newcastle have multiple away wins in a European season for the first time in 19 years.
23 - It was another incredible evening in the Arctic Circle as the UCL's darlings Bodo/Glimt managed to pull another scalp. This time, last season's finalists Inter Milan were the victims in a stunning 3-1 victory for the hosts. The fearless Norwegians are on the cusp of doing something truly special in knocking out the three-time champions - something defender Odin Bjortuft could never have dreamt of. Having started their campaign in the play-off round, they have now scored 23 times in 11 matches.
15 - What an unexpected turn of events for Inter, who looked destined for a top eight finish midway through the league phase. Now, the Nerazzurri have lost four of their last five in the UCL and are in serious danger of an early exit. Before the match, they had never lost to Norwegian opposition, even eliminating Bodo in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. With four defeats this season, it is just the second time they reached that figure in the Champions League. The other occasion came 15 years ago.
4 - The most thrilling match of Wednesday's action came in Belgium, where Club Brugge recovered from two deficits to earn a 3-3 draw against Atletico Madrid. It leaves the tie finely poised heading to Madrid six days later. Few would have expected Blauw-Zwart to put up such a stern test. Yet, they have a chance to progress to the last 16 for the third time in as many attempts. In fact, they stretch their unbeaten run over Atleti to four games (1-3-0).
3 - Atleti will certainly be asking themselves how they failed to come out on top in this match, having had the lead twice. While they are surely still favourites to progress, the challenge has just gotten larger. They did beat Union Saint-Gilloise during the league phase at home, another reason for confidence. With that said, Wednesday marked the third time they scored three or more goals in a European away match and not win. All three matches ended in stalemates.
2 - Olympiakos Piraeus could not repeat the magic they did on matchday 7, falling 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in Greece. Patrik Schick's two goals in the space of three minutes at the hour mark leave Thrylos with an arduous task ahead of them at the BayArena next Tuesday. They have overcome first leg defeats in the recent past - just ask Maccabi Tel Aviv. This is a different test though, one that will show their true mettle. It was the second time Olympiakos have lost to Leverkusen, evening the head-to-head.
32 - Leverkusen have gone quite far in Europe in recent times, making at least the last 16 in each of their last four participations. Assuming they can get the job done next week, it will be their best five-year run in UEFA club competitions ever in terms of consistency. Die Werkself have been particularly impressive on the road this term, making it their third win. Before this, their last success on Greek soil came in the UEFA Cup versus Panathinaikos 32 years ago.
