Having led 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 and cruising to a comfortable win, Sinner's body dramatically gave up on him in the searing Parisian heat, as Cerundolo won six straight games to snatch the third set.
The Argentine showed no signs of easing off against his ailing opponent, and was dominant in sets four and five, prevailing 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 to secure a maiden top-10 victory and the biggest scalp of his career.
As for Sinner, his hopes of completing a Career Grand Slam will have to wait after a damaging defeat.

The 16th seed, who has always struggled to find her best form on the surface, saved seven of 10 break-point opportunities against her Croatian opponent, and will face Iva Jovic next.
