Wolves may have produced an improved display in last weekend’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, but the winless hosts still entered this contest as a team low on confidence, along with their opponents, who had lost three of their previous four competitive matches.
The collective lack of belief was on full display in an uninspiring first half, where fans had to wait until the 39th minute for the first shot on target.
That long-awaited chance fell the way of Bees attacker Keane Lewis-Potter, who regathered the ball from his intercepted pass before he saw his left-foot shot beaten away by Jose Sa, who was making his first PL appearance since September.
However, the Wolves' shot-stopper did not have to wait as long for his first piece of action of the second period, reacting quickly to keep out Kevin Schade’s firm header.
The German international was denied again just moments later, with his low volley forcing Sa to make an unconventional stop.
Regardless, Keith Andrews’s side continued to ramp up the pressure on their hosts until they grabbed a deserved opener just past the hour mark. Ladislav Krejci misjudged Vitaly Janelt’s clipped delivery into the box, allowing it to bounce over him and into the path of Lewis-Potter, who made no mistake in driving past the helpless Sa.
Not content with his first PL goal of the season, Lewis-Potter doubled Brentford’s advantage in the 83rd minute, playing the ball out to Mikkel Damsgaard before making the run to steer home the return cross at full stretch.
Another miserable outing for the hosts was compounded when Jorgen Strand Larsen saw his tame penalty saved by Kelleher, who made amends for fouling Matt Doherty.
The defeat keeps Rob Edwards’ side rooted to the bottom of the table with just two points – with just two games remaining until the halfway point of 2025/26 is reached – while Brentford climb up to 13th spot in the standings.
