With the busy festive period on the horizon, there are some huge football matches this weekend across Europe's top leagues. There is also the small matter of the season-ending Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi as McLaren and Ferrari battle it out for the Constructors' Championship.

Here's what our editors will be watching this weekend:

Saturday, December 7th

Everton vs Liverpool - 13:30 CET

The Premier League action kicks off in style this weekend as league leaders Liverpool take on rivals Everton in what’s likely to be the final-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The Toffees will be determined to mark the momentous clash with a victory and should be full of confidence after Wednesday’s 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.

Sean Dyche’s men also have the added incentive of trying to derail Liverpool’s title bid, who despite dropping points late on against Newcastle in midweek, remain seven points clear at the summit.

The Reds have struggled at Goodison Park in recent years, winning just one of their last seven away derbies, so it promises to be a stern test of Arne Slot’s side’s credentials.

Can Everton produce a performance befitting the occasion or will Liverpool continue their superb start to the season with a crucial derby victory? Make sure you tune in to find out!

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - 14:00 CET

Despite Max Verstappen wrapping up the drivers’ world championship in Las Vegas, there is plenty to play for as the F1 circus heads to Abu Dhabi for the final race of the season.

They may be single-seater cars, but F1 is a team sport too and the Constructors’ Championship is going down to the wire. McLaren - seeking their first constructors’ title since 1998 are 21 points clear of nearest rivals Ferrari and would have to have a disastrous weekend to lose it from here.

Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton, who had a weekend to forget in Qatar last time out will be taking part in his final race for Mercedes after 11 years with the outfit and six world titles.

He will be hoping for a fitting ending before he moves to the aforementioned Prancing Horse. It could also be the last race for Red Bull for Sergio Perez, who has had an ugly second half to 2024.

From the front to the back of the grid, there are drivers ready to prove themselves ahead of the off-season - it’s time to sign off the season in style.

Tottenham vs Chelsea - 17:30 CET

The Premier League weekend wraps up with a cracker of a London derby on Sunday as Tottenham host Chelsea. Not only is this match fuelled by a bitter rivalry but it has also served up some spicy affairs in recent times.

Chelsea are one of the league’s - if not the world’s - form teams at the moment. Head coach Enzo Maresca has transformed the side since arriving in summer and they are currently on a four-match winning run, having not lost for over a month.

The Blues played down their title chances after a midweek thrashing of Southampton but the table doesn't lie - they are second with an identical record to Arsenal. In short, this is a serious team.

Spurs, on the other hand, are having a very odd season under Ange Postecolgou. They have beaten English champions Manchester City twice already (once in the league) but also lost at home to newly-promoted Ipswich. With their loss to Bournemouth on Thursday, they have dipped to 10th in the standings.

If we’ve learnt one thing about Spurs, however, it’s that they save their best for matches with the big boys and this clash should thus not disappoint. One for the neutrals for sure!

Napoli vs Lazio - 20:45 CET

In what has to be seen as the match of the week in the Serie A, Napoli and Lazio meet once again, just three days on from the Biancocelesti knocking out their fellow light blue opponents in the Coppa Italia. Things will be a lot more interesting in the league now as Napoli are the only side currently in the title race not partaking in any other competition, leaving Antonio Conte's men with just that fight to focus on.

Lazio's shocking loss at Parma last weekend brought a run of eight games unbeaten across all competitions to an end, including five successive Serie A wins. A victory at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona will put them just a point behind their opponents in what is already a fascinating title race in Italy.

Napoli will have to be weary of their Rome-based opposition, as they are winless across the sides' last four head-to-heads. That includes home defeats in each of the last two seasons.

Only Atalanta have taken points in Naples this term though, via a resounding 3-0 win; the Partenopei have come out on top in the other six by a 12-2 scoreline.
