Marseille had near complete control from kickoff, and early chances duly came for the Les Olympiens, with Mason Greenwood firing wide from 20 yards and Quentin Merlin forcing Yahia Fofana into a reaction save.
The visitors kept pushing for the match opener – something they hadn’t achieved in their previous four Ligue 1 fixtures – and Roberto De Zerbi’s side thought they’d broken the deadlock when Leonardo Balerdi slotted in from close range, only for the attempt to be ruled out for handball in the build-up.
Marseille remained patient and continued to carve out opportunities, as Ismael Bennacer’s lofted pass landed perfectly for Merlin to volley, and the wing-back’s strike was repelled again by Fofana.
Les Olympiens’ frustrations continued after Amine Gouiri reacted first to Rabiot’s knockdown inside the Angers area, but a swarm of black and white shirts deflected the shot over the crossbar, ensuring Les Scoïstes kept a first-half clean sheet for a third consecutive Ligue 1 match.

Angers gave the visitors an early scare after the break when Jim Allevinah tumbled in the penalty area, but referee Hakim Ben El Hadj took no interest in the appeals and waved play-on.
Les Olympiens kept their composure and started to threaten once more, and Merlin had another glorious opportunity to open the scoring when he met Michael Murillo’s cross with a rasping shot that flew into the side netting.
Eventually, Angers crumbled under Marseille’s relentless pressure, and Rabiot provided the moment of inspiration with his third away goal in four matches, meeting Gouiri’s corner with a thunderous header that left Fofana stranded.
Maupay then wrapped up the victory in style, playing a one-two with Gouri and sliding his finish under Fofana and into the net.
Following a 2-0 loss at Nice in their previous Ligue 1 away game, Marseille needed a response to avoid back-to-back losses on the road since April, and De Zerbi’s men delivered one perfectly – albeit in the nick of time.
Even before slumping to the double blast, Angers were thoroughly outplayed and failed to register a single shot on target, deservedly seeing their three-match unbeaten run at home come to a crashing halt against a Marseille side that may already have one foot in next season’s Champions League.
