Would tying down Lewandowski for one more season be Barcelona's best summer deal?

Whether or not Barcelona go on to win LaLiga, the Champions League or nothing at all, there's no doubt that there will be some transfer movement at the club this summer.

Defensive reinforcements would appear to be a priority for the Catalans, and the small matter of agreeing with Manchester United on Marcus Rashford's permanent signature is also on the table.

Ferran Torres to be sold?

However, it's in the striking department where Barca are arguably in need of an upgrade, specifically in the centre-forward position.

Ferran Torres, aside from when Robert Lewandowski has been injured, has generally been perceived as a backup striker, and this season, the Spaniard seems to have reverted to his old ways.

Fifteen goals and one assist in 36 games in all competitions doesn't sound awful, but nor is it elite-level. Moreover, the number of presentable chances that 'The Shark' has missed could quite easily have seen his tally doubled.

Lewandowski has certainly been a better capture, having scored 117 goals in his time with the Blaugrana and also provided 21 assists.

Lewandowski will be 38 in August

However, it's noticeable just how slow the player is becoming, which isn't really a surprise when he'll be celebrating his 38th birthday in August.

11 goals from his 24 league games this season is still a great return, but unless a chance is put on a plate for the target man, there's little chance of him registering.

For a team and a squad that wants to be up there challenging for the game's top honours, that's not really good enough.

Perhaps that's why rumours continue to circulate that president Joan Laporta is dead set on trying to sign Atletico Madrid's brilliant forward Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez surely out of reach for Barcelona

However, an expected transfer fee of €100m+ would surely put the Argentinian World Cup winner out of reach.

Furthermore, reports coming out of Spain suggest that, in fact, Barca want to offer Lewandowski a one-year contract on a significantly reduced salary, but with performance-based enhancements written into the deal.

That would suggest that Barca's finances still aren't quite where Laporta and his board need them to be at the moment, despite apparent briefings to the contrary, and another 12 months could make all the difference.

In any event, the signing of any deal would almost certainly rest with the player himself, and given that Juventus are known to want to bring Lewandowski to Serie A, along with Randal Kolo Muani (currently on loan at Tottenham from Paris Saint-Germain), perhaps Barca won't get things all their own way.

Rashford down the middle?

Were 'Lewy' to decide to move on to pastures new for what's expected to be the final flourish of his brilliant career, it would likely leave Hansi Flick with limited options.

Torres isn't the answer, and with his contract due to run out in 2027, this summer is a last chance for Barca to be able to cash in to some extent.

Rashford can play down the middle if required, though he has been more effective coming in off the wing. In a 'worst case' scenario where the Catalans can't afford to bring anyone in after Lewandowski decides to leave, moving the Man Utd loanee into the centre might be their only option.

Regardless, the club will still miss their current number nine's contributions.

Decent numbers for Lewy during his Barca career

Only Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong have played more cumulative minutes than Lewandowski's 13,448, whilst the Dutchman and Torres are the only two players to have made more than his 182 appearances since he signed for the club.

Only on the losing side on 35 occasions in all competitions, Barca have won 125 of the matches the Pole has been involved with.

A 21.2% shot conversion rate is the highest in the entire Barca squad, whilst his shooting accuracy of 58.2% is arguably also the best.

De Jong's slightly higher 59.6% accuracy can't be compared, as the midfielder has only managed 10 goals in the same time period during which Lewandowski has scored more than a century.

548 total shots taken is also well clear of his nearest rival, Raphinha (472), whilst 127 headers at goal and 87 big chances scored put him at the top of the tree.

Ronald Araujo is the one player to have contested more than his 510 headed duels, with Lewy's 1,407 one-on-one ground duels contested bettered only by Gavi and Lamine Yamal.

The one area where Lewandowski is just about average is with his passing accuracy (74.9%), but the same is true of most centre-forwards, so that metric should really be overlooked.

When taking stock of everything on and off the pitch, perhaps a one-year performance-related contract, whilst not ideal, might actually be the best piece of business Barcelona does this summer.
