Ange Postecoglou emerged as the overnight favourite to take charge of Nottingham Forest, opening the door for a potential return to Premier League management.

The former Tottenham boss, who led Spurs to Europa League glory last season, was sacked despite that success. Now he is in the frame to succeed Nuno Espirito Santo, who has parted ways with Forest after strained relations with the club’s hierarchy came to a head during the international break.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis is understood to be a strong admirer of Postecoglou and has been weighing up a brave move.

The Greek businessman even presented the 60-year-old with a special award in July to mark his Europa League triumph, praising him publicly and hinting at further success to come.

Whispers within football circles in recent days had suggested Forest are serious about making their move, with a decision expected swiftly.

While the chaotic nature of Forest’s structure may not be the perfect fit, sources close to the coach say Postecoglou is eager to step back into management and would give the opportunity serious consideration.

Forest are competing in this season’s Europa League, offering him the chance of another tilt at a competition he conquered so recently.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Marinakis is bold enough to follow through on his admiration by bringing Postecoglou back to England’s top flight.
