Ajax have announced the arrival of former Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Oscar Gloukh.

Ajax pay a fixed fee of €14.75 million for Gloukh. The total transfer fee could rise to €17.25 million via bonuses.

The Israeli midfielder has put pen to paper on a five-year contract in Amsterdam.

The 21-year-old Gloukh joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2023 from Maccabi Tel Aviv and shone in his final two seasons in Austria, notching 17 goals and 17 assists in 55 appearances for the 17-time Bundesliga champions.

Ajax beat several clubs in the race to sign Gloukh. As negotiations between the Amsterdam giants and Red Bull Salzburg took longer, the likes of RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart, and AS Roma threatened to hijack the deal.

Creative heart

According to Gloukh's father, Roma offered Gloukh two-and-a-half times the wages Ajax offered the midfielder, but Gloukh chose Ajax. "He had a dream to go there, and that dream came true," Gloukh's father told radio station 5 On Air.

In Amsterdam, Gloukh will play with the number 10 shirt, last worn by Chuba Akpom and before that by club icon Dusan Tadic. Gloukh joins a midfield group devoid of much creativity - something the young star was brought in to provide.

Gloukh joins a midfield consisting of Steven Berghuis, Davy Klaassen, Kenneth Taylor, and young Jorthy Mokio, who seems primed to compete for a starting role following Jordan Henderson's departure.

More Ajax transfers?

However, Ajax might not be done on the transfer market. Dutch sources speculate that Ajax are still after a new controlling midfielder and want to add a left-back, too, with Jorrel Hato set to join Chelsea on a €43 million deal.

Ajax missed out on winning their first Eredivisie title since 2022 last season after the Amsterdam club squandered a double-digit lead in the final weeks of the season, allowing rivals PSV to claim a second consecutive league title.

Ajax open their new Eredivisie season on Sunday, August 10th, with a home game against Telstar.
