Beginning with a bang
The first round of fixtures has a few eye-catching ties. Bayern begin their campaign against Club World Cup winners Chelsea, a repeat of the famous 2012 final that saw the Blues beat the Bavarians on home soil via penalties.
Meanwhile, Newcastle host Barcelona on their return to the competition, whilst reigning champions PSG face the tricky proposition of Atalanta as they begin their title defence.
Standout ties through winter
Matchday two brings more drama as PSG face Barcelona, with Luis Enrique returning to his former side. Another reunion that will set the world alight happens on Matchday four, where Trent Alexander-Arnold will return to Anfield to face Liverpool with his new side Real Madrid. The reception he gets will be feisty, given his acrimonious departure from Merseyside over the summer.
Final day mayhem
We saw last season how much can change on the final matchday, and it will be similar again this year, with 18 games all kicking off at the same time, as sides battle to make it into the knockout rounds.
Napoli will end their campaign against Chelsea, a homecoming of sorts for the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, whilst PSG host Newcastle. The two sides played out two classic ties when they last faced each other in the Champions League - expect the same with more on the line this time around.
The knockouts
Once the league phase is complete, attention will turn to the knockout rounds in the battle to reach the final in Budapest on May 30th.
The top eight teams from the league phase will qualify automatically for the last 16, whilst the teams that finish from 9th to 24th will head into a play-off to see who joins those top eight teams.
