Marcel Rapp’s Holstein Kiel side recorded the greatest result in the club’s history with a sensational 4-2 victory over eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund during what was the pair’s first-ever Bundesliga meeting.

Despite losing in their weekend clash against Freiburg, Kiel netted twice in the final five minutes, and die Storche picked up where they left off against Dortmund by waltzing to a three-goal half-time lead.

The underdogs’ unexpected onslaught began when Shuto Machino opened the deadlock just before the half-hour mark with the Japanese ace sweeping home a thumping right-footed effort into the top corner of Gregor Kobel’s goal.

Sensing Dortmund’s vulnerability, Kiel continued to threaten on the counter and were rewarded with a second.

This time, Lasse Rosenboom whipped a cross into the path of Phil Harres who gleefully headed home.

Already in dreamland, two became three for the hosts, with Harres turning provider for Alexander Bernhardsson, who hooked his left foot around the ball from 12 yards out to cap off a stunning 45 minutes.

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Dortmund in the first half, so it was no surprise to see a reaction in the second.

Giovanni Reyna started the comeback with a goal out of nowhere, picking the ball up on the edge of the 18-yard box and rifling into the far left corner.

Jamie Gittens found the net in equally impressive fashion, finding the opposite corner of the goal with a stylish finish.

Dortmund were handed an extra lifeline in the game’s dying embers when Lewis Holtby, the Kiel captain, was shown red for a clumsy tackle on Felix Nmecha.

The visitors weren’t able to take advantage of their extra man, with Kiel the side who found the game’s sixth goal instead.

With Kobel up down the opposite end for a last-minute corner, Jann-Fiete Arp was able to run the majority of the pitch after winning the ball back, before stroking into an empty goal from range and securing just Kiel’s third victory of the Bundesliga season.
