A win would take Orgryte level with Degerfors and just two points shy of the guaranteed survival spots, while just a second win of the season would see Halmstad cut the gap to the hosts to just three points.
It was the home side's scenario that looked the more likely midway through the first half, as OIS' early pressure was rewarded with a wonderful two-man attack. Noah Christoffersson nodded the ball down to Tobias Sana, who returned the favour with a through pass to Christoffersson, who shaped to shoot before squaring the ball back to the onrushing Sana, and he finished coolly.
But the visitors responded well and were level again in the 38th minute, as Hussein Carneil played the ball through, allowing Rocco Ascone to clip the ball past the advancing goalkeeper, Hampus Gustafsson.
In a second half of few chances, Gustafsson had to remain alert to earn Orgryte a point when his fingertip save denied a powerful goalbound effort from Ascone with 10 minutes to play. OIS end a two-match losing run, and Halmstad a run of three defeats, yet the point does little to change either side's prospects.
