The club announced Bellamy's medical diagnosis on Thursday evening, assuring he will continue to coach the Storm for the immediate future.

The 66-year-old, currently contracted with the Storm until the end of the 2028 season, had earlier this week made the shock decision to leave his coaching role with the New South Wales State of Origin team just weeks out from the start of the series.

Bellamy was a senior advisor to Blues coach Laurie Daley during the 2025 series, assisting with everything from team selection to structural setup and was expected to stay on for the foreseeable future.

Having chalked up his 600th first grade games as coach last year, Bellamy is currently engaged in the fight of his coaching career with an almost unprecedented six consecutive losses, matching the club record set during the middle of the 2002 season.

Despite their surprise on-field struggles, Storm CEO Matt Tripp and club captain Harry Grant have both passionately and publicly backed Bellamy's ability to turn their fortunes around, with individual on-field performances being pinpointed as reason for the Storm sitting in 16th on the ladder.

"Despite our recent results, I firmly believe Craig is still coaching at an elite level and I have no doubt he is the right person to drive the Club forward," Tripp said in a statement.

"Craig has the full support of the board, players, coaches, and staff to continue leading the Club as he has done for the last 24 seasons.

The Storm announced on Thursday night that "diagnosed with a form of Neurodegenerative Disorder" following a set of medical tests.

"He is receiving the best possible medical treatment and has been advised by specialists that his diagnosis will not have an impact on his ability to coach the team in the immediate future," the statement confirmed.

Neurodenegerative disorders are typically caused by the progressive breakdown of brain cells over time and, depending on circumstances and available treatment, can slowly cause issues with cognitive ability and physical function.

The Storm have been preparing for a crucial Friday night game against the 12th-placed Dolphins.

We at Flashscore News extend our love and our very best wishes to Craig and his family for the future.
