Javier Aguirre parted ways with the Mexico national team after the defeat against England in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The coach himself had already confirmed that Rafa Marquez would be his successor, with the Mexican federation making the appointment official this Wednesday.
Marquez, the former Mexican centre-back, shone at Barcelona between 2003 and 2009, and began his coaching career at the Catalan club.
He is one of his nation's biggest legends, racking up 147 caps and captaining them at each World Cup from 2002 to 2018.
In 2024, he took on the role of assistant coach for the national team and has now been promoted to head coach.
