Beaten in overtime when the top two met last time out, a home game against lowly Orebro looked to be the ideal tonic for Frolunda, but they were given a rude awakening in the ninth minute when Kalle Kossila put the visitors in front on their first powerplay.
But not only did Arttu Ruotsalainen level matters with a powerplay goal of his own before the first period was out, Frolunda turned things around a few seconds into the second through Nicklas Lasu.
However, that was the first of four evenly-shared goals in the middle period, as Linus Arnesson and Patrik Puistola carved out equalisers for Orebro who would not lie down, either side of Linus Hogberg putting the home side 3-2 ahead.
Then, a two-minute spell in the third period left the Gothenburg crowd stunned, as Kossila scored his second to regain the lead, before it was cemented by Jesse Ylonen, as he made it 5-3. Noah Dower Nilsson pulled one back to set up a nervy finish in the last four minutes, but Orebro held on to win 5-4.
Frolunda remain eight points clear at the summit thanks to Skelleftea's fantastic form completely desertinf them as they were beaten 5-0 away at Rogle, who remain in third place and now nine points back following a first win in three.
Skelleftea's eight-game win streak was already in serious danger five minutes in, by which time Lubos Horky and Albin Sundsvik had already put Rogle 2-0 up, with Sundsvik goal scored when shorthanded.
Horky then added his second on a powerplay approaching the midpoint in the match, then Fredrik Olofsson notched a brace of his own in the third period to round off the scoring, as the away side failed to find a way past Arvid Holm, although he only needed to make nine saves.
Vaxjo now have the best form in the SHL after they picked up a fourth victory in a row, running out 4-2 winners away at Leksand to stay a point shy of Rogle in fourth. Linus Oberg's second period goal was enough for Malmo to stay fifth, beating Djurgarden 1-0 for a second win in a row.
Lulea scraped a 2-1 win at Linkoping to return to form and maintain a decent cushion between themselves and those outside the top six, the closest of which is Timra, who ended Farjestad's recent upturn in form by hammering them 8-2, as 12 home players picked up at least one point.
A fourth win in five in the league has taken Brynas up to eighth, as HV 71 fell to a 3-2 loss to become their latest scalp and remain six points from safety.
