German national team goalkeeper Andreas Wolff hits out against bitter rivals Austria before the two countries face each other on opening night when the European Championships start on Thursday.

Austria has a habit of playing seven against six in their attacks, which is certainly not applauded by the experienced German goalkeeper.

"They play anti-handball. No one wants to watch it because it's not attractive to watch."

Also, for us players it's more a question of patience than a proof of quality, because in defense you have to work extremely hard", he says in an interview with Sky.

Constantin Möstl from TBV Lemgo Lippe will guard the goalposts for Austria, while Möstl's teammates Lukas Hutecek and Mykola Bilyk (THW Kiel) "will direct the attack in all its ugliness. It won't be a handball treat. But we have to stand strong, show our quality, and score easy goals from our defense," says the 34-year-old Wolff. The Austrians defend "with a lot of passion and toughness."

Alfred Gislason's team has struggled against its southern neighbors on several occasions in recent years. In the European Championship qualifiers last March, the German national team could only manage a 26-26 draw in Vienna.

At the previous European Championship in 2024, the Austrians, whose squad includes seven Bundesliga professionals, also managed a 22-22 draw against Germany in the main round.
