Mize, 29, is in the midst of a career year. His current 2.70 ERA is by far a career-best, while opponents are batting just .213 off him - last year they hit .263. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft has given up 67 hits and 19 walks with 85 strikeouts through 86.2 innings this season.
San Diego acquired veteran starting pitcher Robbie Ray earlier in the day (details here).
The Tigers are receiving Padres No. 2 prospect Kash Mayfield (LHP, High-A) and 27-year-old minor league pitcher Jackson Wolf as part of the deal.
The veteran had a rough start to his career despite being a top draft pick. Mize made his debut in 2020, tossing a 6.99 ERA through seven starts. He bounced back in 2021 with a 3.71 ERA in 30 starts, tossing what is still a career-most 150.1 innings.
But in 2022, Mize had to undergo both Tommy John surgery and back surgery, causing him to also miss the entire 2024 season.
Mize had a steady 2024 return (4.49 ERA) before turning it all around in 2025, a season in which he set a career-best 139 strikeouts through 149 innings (28 starts). Now, the pitcher is heading to (TEAM NAME) after being one of the most sought-after pitchers at the trade deadline.
Workman, 26, is slashing a brutal .158/.158/.395 in 16 MLB games this year, but .305/.366/.502 with 11 home runs, 51 RBI, and 20 stolen bases in Triple-A.
