For the fourth year running, Flashscore brings you its ranking of the 100 players most anticipated ahead of the upcoming NBA season. Victor Wembanyama takes third place, with an MVP award seemingly destined to be his sooner or later. But he still needs to push his body and his team further.

He was expected to be the NBA's next game-changer. And after three seasons, he has not disappointed. Victor Wembanyama, the Alien, has brought the San Antonio Spurs back to the top of the NBA in first class.

Almost, at least. The Texans missed the final step, whether through inexperience or hubris, losing to the Knicks in the NBA Finals. That barely tarnishes his grade.

Reaching the NBA Finals as a franchise player is a huge achievement. Game after game, Wemby has lived up to his status. And, of course, he does not yet appear to have reached the limits of his abilities. Certain aspects of his game, such as his shot selection and the variety of his offensive approach during games, still need to be perfected.

Nevertheless, the players are emphatic. Most of them name him as the next recipient of the MVP award.

That would be logical, but there are certain conditions to meet.

The much-criticised 65-game rule is still in place, and it was a struggle to try to overcome that restriction last season. An exception was made, and the Defensive Player of the Year award ended up in his hands. But exceptions will not be made every year.

Finding the right balance between physical fitness and elite-level performances is the next step.

There is no doubt that Wemby is now among the very best of the very best in the NBA, but the final steps are always the hardest to take. They lead to an MVP award and an NBA title.

There is time, obviously, to claim those prestigious honours. But not when it comes to becoming a legend.

2025/2026 stats: 25 points on 51.2% shooting, including 34.9% from three-point range, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks (64 games).

Reasonable 2026/2027 target: 30 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, MVP candidate, Defensive Player of the Year candidate
