Ahead of the final squad being confirmed, much of the attention was on the men's javelin - 2024 bronze medallist Oliver Helander had already secured his place alongside Topi Parviainen, but the in-form Teemu Narvi had not accrued enough ranking points to qualify, thus Eemil Porvari took the third Finnish spot.
On the women's side, Senni Salminen will be hoping to add a European outdoor medal to the indoor bronze she secured in Apeldoorn last year. Saga Vanninen took pentathlon gold at that meeting, but she will not be featuring in the heptathlon in Birmingham, owing to ongoing shoulder and ankle injuries.
Vanninen is also on the lookout for a new coach, having recently parted company with Estonian decathlon legend, Erki Nool. These championships have also come too early for sprinter Nora Lindahl, who is still serving her suspension having switched allegiance from Sweden.
