After tearing his MCL on Sunday, Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (27) could still be ready to go come playoff time after being left off the injured reserve.

Montgomery was originally ruled out for the season following the injury. But after receiving another opinion, the other half of the Lions' Sonic-Knuckles running back duo with Jahmyr Gibbs could return at the perfect time.

"It is one of these injuries that's unique because you need to know is it stable?" said head coach Dan Campbell. "OK, is it fixed, or will it scar? And then be certainly stable for now and for later, and then you've got to rely on him, like, ‘Hey man, I'm good. I can do this."

"So, it's a combination certainly the doctors then him as well, where he thinks he can go with it and can he protect himself and play at a high level. So, we're in a holding pattern, which as of right now is a positive."

Even with the injury, Montgomery still continues to make a difference in the community.

Montgomery has been stellar for the Lions this season, wracking up 775 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on 185 attempts. He was just two rushing touchdowns and 241 rushing yards from setting career highs.

Montgomery needed just 97 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns to set career highs through the air as well.

The former 73rd overall pick in the 2019 draft signed a two-year, $18.25 million contract extension with the Lions this year, which will expire in 2028 making Montgomery an unrestricted free agent.
