Samuel was initially a second-round pick by the 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft, proving to be a versatile player under coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive set-up for six seasons. Following the 2025 season, he was traded to the Washington Commanders.
In his only season in Washginton, Samuel had 72 catches for 727 yards as well as five touchdowns.
A free agent before the move, Samuel was called up by the 49ers as they were left concerned with the wide receiver core due to injuries. Curerntly, Christian Kirk (calf) and Ricky Pearsall (knee) are out while tight end Geroge Kittle is unlikely to be ready in time for their opening game of the year.
The 49ers also brought in Mike Evans, who joins after spending 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buaccaneers where he had 866 receptions for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns.
