Martina Trevisan could not play any tennis for over nine months due to a foot injury and was only able to begin her 2025 season in the month of July. The former world No. 18 has since played five tournaments across clay and hard courts, and at best come away with various second-round finishes.
Last week, she got the better of Olivia Gadecki, 6–3, 6–2, at 125K Guadalajara but could not do the same against world No. 544 Maria Kozyreva in the second round. It just shows she has a long way to go before she can play the kind of tennis that made her a top-20 player two years ago.
The 31-year-old has plenty of experience playing on Mexican hard courts. When it comes to Guadalajara, in particular, she has participated in the city's WTA events in the previous three seasons, going on to settle as the quarterfinalist in 2023 and 2024 (she beat Ons Jabeur in the 2023 edition).
Rebecca Marino picked up three crucial wins in Flushing Meadows, leading to her successful qualification at the US Open, but was unable to overcome Leylah Fernandez in the first round. The Canadian flew straight into 125K Guadalajara last week and faced another first-round disappointment.
It has been an underwhelming season for the former world No. 38, currently outside the top 100 rankings. In tour events, she has been held back with a 2–5 main draw performance, barely beating Lulu Sun in Auckland in January and, more recently, Elsa Jacquemot in Montreal on home soil.
Head-to-head: Martina Trevisan leads 1–0. The pair pushed each other all the way to the deciding set tiebreak at a hard-court W100 event in Vancouver in Canada seven years ago. With the Canadian's advantage in match practice and the Italian's better history in Guadalajara, the odds remain hanging in the balance.
